BANGOR PROTESTS ON THE 3rd ANNIVERSARY OF THE IRAQ WAR
18 March 2006
A large crowd from Bangor, Ynys Môn, Llandudno and Caernarfon gathered on Bangor High Street at 12 noon on Saturday 18 March 2006 to protest against the war-mongering policies of George Bush and Tony Blair. New faces, familiar faces, young and old. A bitterly cold day, with welcome cups of hot soup dispensed to the protestors.
There were peace flags, and banners and placards calling for the withdrawal of UK & US troops from Iraq, hands off Iran, a nuclear-free Middle East an end to illegal wars and occupations from Palestine to Afghanistan. Most moving was a huge poster on the side of the black hoardings outside the Wellfield Centre construction site, a sombre bar chart of deaths in the so-called ‘War on Terror’, the ‘Long War’ as it is now ominously known amongst the neocons. Here were the civilian deaths in the UK & the USA, the troop fatalities, and towering high above them all two huge columns representing the Iraqi dead, each little mark an individual death.’You don’t count the dead when God’s on your side’.
Hywel Williams MP, who was in the crowd, made a powerful address despite losing his voice and being unwell. Protestors then queued to read out, one by one, 50 lies by Tony Blair about the Iraq War, words which tolled like bells. This was the lie-in. Others now read relevant pieces, articles and Karl Sadil recited poetry. Next came the die-in. People lay down all over the road and their outlines were chalked on to the ground. Passers-by joined in to create the shapes of death.
The rally was organised by Bangor & Ynys Môn Peace & Justice together with University of Wales Bangor UNA. Many thanks to all who supported and all who organised, with extra special thanks to John Gregory, Ian Cuthbertson, and soupmakers extraordinaires.
